In 2008, when he was injured in the early part of the year and suffered the pain of losing his mother in April, he still started six of England's ten matches.
He missed Fabio Capello's first two fixtures in charge, but was back in the fold for the Wembley friendly with USA at the end of May. He slotted a superb pass through for Jermain Defoe early in the second half, substitute goalkeeper Brad Guzan blocking the Portsmouth striker's shot, and then made way for Gareth Barry on 57 minutes.
Frank was almost an ever-present in the second half of the year, starting five out of six matches. Late in the first half of the new season's opener against Czech Republic his clever dummy allowed midfield partner Steven Gerrard to test Petr Cech with a firm right-footer that he saved low to his left. Eleven minutes from time he was substituted by David Bentley.
He played all but the last few minutes of the 2-0 win against Andorra in Barcelona in September and then the whole 90 minutes as England achieved a fabulous result in Croatia in the second World Cup Qualifier four days later. He helped to create the second goal of Theo Walcott's hat-trick and had his own "goal" disallowed after Emile Heskey was adjudged to have fouled Simunic.
England picked up six more qualifying points in October and Lampard played for the whole 90 minutes against both Kazakhstan and Belarus.
